Frontier League Hot Stove Notebook

December 23, 2008 - Wayne Krenchicki is the new manager of the Evansville Otters.

The veteran minor-league skipper has won more than 1,000 games in 18 seasons, most recently with the Newark Bears of the independent Atlantic League. He played eight years of major-league ball with Baltimore, Cincinnati, Detroit and Montreal as a third baseman. He replaces Jason Verdugo, who resigned earlier this month.

Mark Mason, formerly the manager in Chillicothe, is the manager in Washington. Mason was a member of the Wild Things' coaching staff until he became the skipper of the travelling Ohio Valley Redcoats in 2005. He was named Manager of the Year that season. Mason replaces Greg Jelks, another longtime Frontier League face. Jelks worked on a 1-year contract, according to Observer-Reporter sports editor Chris Dugan's blog.

Windy City lost a player before he even reported for spring training. Texas signed catcher Brandon Harrigan. The 'Bolts were also active on the trade front. They picked up pitcher Brandon Kloess from Texarkana of the the independent Continental League in exchange for future considerations.

In a reversal of a July 24 trade, Evansville sent first baseman/outfielder Nick Salotti back to Florence. The Otters regained the player they originally gave up in the earlier trade, DH Justin Randall. Both teams presumably kept their receipts from the original transaction.

In another trade, the Otters dealt pitcher Cody Castle to New Hampshire of the independent Can-Am League for infielder Dorian Rojas.

The Freedom sent lefty Chris Ingoglia to River City for righty Danny Powers.
