Szymanski stymies Rascals, 2-1

June 2, 2011 - O’FALLON, Mo. – Alex Szymanski took a shutout to the eighth inning and combined with Brett Durand on a three-hitter Thursday as the Rockford RiverHawks beat the River City Rascals, 2-1.

Szymanski (2-0) struck out seven and walked two over eight innings. He held the Rascals to two hits, including a two-out home run to left by Bobby Burk in the eighth inning.

Rockford’s Jake Eigsti broke a scoreless tie with a one-on, one-out home run to right-center field in the sixth inning. Eigsti was 3-for-4 and extended his season-long hitting streak to 12 games.

Durand gave up a two-out single to former RiverHawk Stephen Holdren in the ninth, but struck out two and picked up his fourth save.

River City starter Josh Lowey (0-1) gave up five hits over eight innings and took the loss.

The RiverHawks head to Gateway for a three-game series against the Grizzlies. The series opener, set for 7:05 p.m. Friday, will be aired live on ESPN 1380.

The RiverHawks’ next home game is 7:05 p.m. Tuesday, June 7 against the River City Rascals. Petco sponsors the Bark in the Park. Fans are invited to bring their dogs to the stadium on Tuesday night home games. Thompsons’ Transmission sponsors Kids Eat Free Tuesdays.
