Nelson hits walkoff homer to beat 'Hawks, 7-5

July 21, 2010 - JOLIET, Ill. – Jon Nelson hit a walkoff two-run home run in the ninth inning on Wednesday as the Joliet Jackhammers beat the Rockford RiverHawks, 7-5, at Silver Cross Field.

Joliet has won two of the first three games in the four-game series, both via a walkoff. They won Monday’s series opener, 5-4, on a walkoff error in the 11th inning.

On Wednesday, the RiverHawks scored three two-out runs in the first inning. Travis Scott singled in a run and scored on Pat O’Sullivan’s two-run single. Joliet rallied for four two-out runs in the bottom of the first – Freddie Thon singled in two and Chris Colton followed with a two-run homer – and never again trailed.

Rockford reliever Jon Huizinga (3-1) entered in the bottom of the ninth with the game tied, 5-5. With one out, Kevin Rios singled and with two outs, Nelson hit a shot to left field for his 18th homer of the year.

Joliet reliever William Jackel gave up four hits, but pitched two scoreless innings for the win. Jackel (4-0) escaped a first-and-third, two-out jam in the eighth. Rockford stranded 12, six in scoring position.

The series finale is at 7:10 p.m. Thursday.

The RiverHawks’ next home game is at 12:05 p.m. Tuesday, July 27 against Winnipeg. It’s the Big Splash Spectacular and a Two-For Tuesday.
