Wood pitches complete game for first win
« Back

July 20, 2010 - JOLIET, Ill. – Mike Wood gave the overtaxed Rockford bullpen some relief on Tuesday.

The five-year major-league veteran pitched a complete game for his first Northern League win as the RiverHawks beat the Joliet Jackhammers, 11-1, at Silver Cross Field. Pat O’Sullivan and Rich Austin homered for the RiverHawks, who have won four of six since the all-star break. Jono Brooks added a career-high four hits.

Wood (1-3) had a shutout until the ninth inning and scattered seven hits in his third career complete game. The RiverHawks lost each of his first seven starts and he’d gone winless in his first eight – he’d twice left with the lead after six innings only to watch it evaporate.

Rockford never trailed. The RiverHawks scored an unearned run with two outs in the first inning. Jason James scored from first base when the Jackhammers committed two throwing errors on Austin’s single to center field.

The RiverHawks scored seven two-out runs. In the second inning, Brooks and Kevin House had back-to-back RBI singles. O’Sullivan hit his 11th home run in the third inning. In the fourth, after a run scored on a one-out error, Travis Scott singled in two more two-out runs to drive Joliet starter Devin Anderson (3-2) from the game. Austin hit his third homer of the year with two outs in the sixth.

Rockford added three runs in the ninth.

Wood needed just 113 pitches – 72 were strikes – for his first complete-game win since he went the distance against the Iowa Cubs while with the Texas Rangers’ Triple-A Oklahoma City team on May 18, 2007. The Rockford bullpen was shorthanded because of illness and an 11-inning game on Monday. Brett Durand, normally a starter, was needed in relief in a 5-4 loss in the series opener. Wood is the first Rockford starter to last nine innings in more than a year.

Wood struck out three and walked two. He gave up three hits in the ninth, including Ryan Wehrle’s two-out RBI single.

The series continues at 7:10 p.m. Wednesday.

The RiverHawks’ next home game is at 12:05 p.m. Tuesday, July 27 against Winnipeg. It’s the Big Splash Spectacular and a Two-For Tuesday.
