RiverHawks host Bark for Life Relay
« Back

July 19, 2010 - LOVES PARK, Ill. – The Rockford RiverHawks have teamed up with the American Cancer Society to host the Bark for Life mini-relay.

For more than 20 years, Relay for Life has brought hope to thousands of cancer survivors, patients, caregivers and volunteers. For the first year, canine companions are invited to join in the fight against cancer at the American Cancer Society’s Bark for Life mini-Relay. The event will take place at 1:30pm on Sunday, August 1 at Road Ranger Stadium, prior to the RiverHawks game against the Kansas City T-Bones and includes a non-competitive, short walk, canine contests, and entertaining activities for dogs and owners alike.

The Bark for Life event and fundraiser honors the life-long love, support, and compassion dogs provide to cancer patients and their families during times of both struggle and joy. Canines offer emotional support and comfort to their owners and also hold roles as therapy and service dogs.

More than 100 dogs and owners are expected to participate in this year’s Bark for Life of Winnebago County. Owners can register online or at the event, and registration is $25 in advance or $35 the day of the event.

Each participant is encouraged to have a minimum fundraising goal of $100. “Dog Lovers” who raise at least $100 will receive a Bark for Life bandana; “Golden Bones” with at least $250 in pledges will receive a bandana and a commemorative t-shirt, and “Wonder Dogs” who raise $500 or more will receive a t-shirt and a Bark for Life leash. The money raised through the event will aid the American Cancer Society’s support services for local patients and their families, as well as cancer research programs, community education and advocacy initiatives.

Bark for Life of Winnebago County is one of thirteen canine Relay for Life events scheduled throughout Illinois in July and August. For more information on how to get involved, contact the American Cancer Society at (815) 229.1287 or visit www.BarkForLifeWinnebagoCounty.com.
