« Back

July 5, 2010 - LOVES PARK, Ill. – Jason James and Scott Roehl are headed to Arizona.

The Northern League announced on Monday that the two Rockford RiverHawks have been picked to play in an interleague all-star game against the Golden League next week in Tucson. James, an outfielder, is leading the league in hitting. Roehl, Rockford’s closer, is among the league’s leaders in saves.

The Northern-Golden All-Star Game is scheduled for 8 p.m. CDT Wednesday, July 14 at Hi Corbett Field.

James is hitting .341 with five home runs and 24 RBI. James has been an All-Star in each of his first four full seasons with the RiverHawks. He was a Frontier League All-Star in 2007-09 – Rockford moved up to the Northern League after last season. James is the RiverHawks’ all-time home run (39), hit (474), RBI (223), double (100) and run (201) leader.

Roehl, in his first year with the RiverHawks, is 2-1 with a 2.60 earned-run average and 10 saves, second in the Northern League. Roehl was an Eastern League All-Star in 2008, when he was with the Cleveland Indians’ Class AA Akron club.

The 20-man all-star rosters are comprised of players from the ten GBL teams in California, Arizona, Hawaii, Mexico and western Canada versus players from the eight Northern League teams in Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, North Dakota, and Manitoba, Canada.

The GBL and NoL are two of the most successful and heavily scouted independent leagues in the country and combined had more than 30 of their players acquired by major league organizations in 2009. The two leagues combined for five of Baseball America magazine’s Top 10 Independent League Prospects of 2009. The Northern League team was picked by league managers, coaches, general managers, broadcasters and media.

The interleague agreement, announced last December, is a two-year partnership. The Northern League’s Lake County Fielders are scheduled to host the 2011 game. Rockford hosted the 2009 Frontier League All-Star Game.

The RiverHawks are members of the Northern League, an eight-team independent professional baseball league in its 18th season.
