RedHawks beat RiverHawks, 9-4

July 1, 2010 - FARGO, N.D. – T.J. Stanton held Rockford scoreless until the seventh inning as Fargo-Moorhead beat the RiverHawks, 9-4, in a Thursday matinee at Newman Outdoor Field.

Nic Jackson was 3-for-4 with a RBI for the RedHawks, who split the four-game series. Rich Austin was 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI doubles for the RiverHawks, who dropped five of eight games in a two-city trip that included a stop in Winnipeg.

Fargo scored two runs in the first inning, two in the second, two in the fifth and two in the sixth for an 8-0 lead.

Jackson, a left-handed hitter, beat a Rockford defensive shift that put three infielders to the right of second base. Jackson singled through the shortstop’s normal spot to break a scoreless tie in the first inning. Eric Campbell drove in a run with a groundout in a similar shift.

In the fifth inning, Rockford starter Mike Wood walked Jesse Hoorelbeke, then Jackson singled to left field. Wood hit Campbell to load the bases for Alan Rick, who hit a two-run single to right. Wood (0-3) left after he walked the following batter.

Stanton (2-2), who held the RiverHawks to two hits through six innings, left after Rockford started the seventh inning with four straight hits. Austin doubled in a run and Jake Eigsti drove Stanton from the mound with a RBI single. Evan McArthur’s added a sacrifice fly. Austin doubled in a run in the eighth to cut the deficit to four runs, but the RiverHawks were hitless the rest of the game.

The RiverHawks come home to play Schaumburg at 7:05 p.m. Friday. The Independence Day weekend starts with postgame fireworks, sponsored by Rock Valley College. It’s also the Friday Fish Fry and Free Gas Friday. Miller Lite and 2nd Cousin’s sponsor Dollar Beer Night.
