May 20, 2010 - LOVES PARK, Ill. – Four Rockford errors and a five-run Schaumburg fifth inning cost the RiverHawks a 10-2 loss in their Northern League debut.

Richard Mercado and Mike Mooney each hit home runs for the Flyers, in front of a near-sellout crowd of 2,780 on a drizzling Thursday at Road Ranger Stadium. Jono Brooks hit a second-inning homer for the RiverHawks.

It was the first game for the RiverHawks, who moved from the Frontier League at the end of last season.

The Flyers never trailed and took the lead for good on a pair of unearned runs in the fourth inning. Brandon Newton reached on a throwing error by Brooks at shortstop and scored on Kelly Hunt’s double to the center-field fence to break a 1-1 tie. Antoan Richardson singled home Hunt with two outs.

Rockford starter Mike Wood, a five-year major-league veteran, was lifted four batters and two errors into the fifth inning and took the loss. Mercado hit a three-run homer later in the inning to break the game wide open. Mooney hit a solo shot to left in the sixth.

Schaumburg starter Dustin Gloat didn’t strike out a batter, but walked only one and scattered a run on four hits over seven innings for the win.

Former Chicago Cub Randall Simon was 1-for-4 with a double in his RiverHawks debut.

The season-opening, four-game series continues at 7:05 p.m. Friday. It’s OSF St. Anthony’s RiverHawks Batting Helmet Night.
