RiverHawks sign utility player

January 25, 2010 - LOVES PARK, Ill. – The Rockford RiverHawks have signed a versatile player.

The RiverHawks announced Monday that they have signed catcher-outfielder Ernie Munoz. Munoz made appearances at six positions for the Coastal Kingfish of the independent Continental League last year.

Munoz hit .288 with no home runs and 27 RBI last year for the Kingfish. His 14 doubles was the league’s fifth-best total.

Munoz played 35 games in right field, five behind the plate, four each as a center fielder and as a pitcher, two at third base and one at second base.

Munoz, 23, has rookie status in the Northern League.

The RiverHawks are members of the Northern League, an eight-team independent professional baseball league that will play its 18th season in 2010. The RiverHawks’ ninth season begins at 7:05 p.m. May 20 against the Schaumburg Flyers at Road Ranger Stadium. Advertising and ticket information is available by calling (815) 885-2255.
