October 19, 2009 - LOVES PARK, Ill. – Baseball season hasn’t come to an end for some Rockford RiverHawks.

Catcher Robert Sabates and pitcher Jose Mateo have signed to play in the first-year Florida Winter Baseball League. The four-team FWBL begins its season on Oct. 30. Sabates and Mateo both play for the Miami Diamantes.

Sabates (above), a Cuban exile, makes his home in Miami. The former Chicago Cubs farmhand batted .264 with five home runs and 47 RBI for the RiverHawks this summer.

Mateo, a native of the Dominican Republic, now lives in Palm Beach, Fla. The right-hander was 1-1 with a 6.25 earned-run average in 17 appearances with Rockford.

FWBL rosters include both indy-league players as well as talent under contract to major-league organizations. Each team has a 60-game schedule.

The RiverHawks are members of the Northern League, an eight-team independent professional baseball league that will play its 18th season in 2010. Advertising and ticket information is available by calling (815) 885-2255. Games are broadcast live on ESPN 1380 (WTJK-AM) and the internet.
