« Back

July 18, 2009 - LOVES PARK, Ill. – The Rockford RiverHawks were looking to recover from last night’s loss to Kalamazoo, but a three-run top of the sixth inning by the Kings contributed to the RiverHawks 5-2 loss on Saturday evening.

Brendan Murphy hit two home runs for the Kings, his first coming in the top of the fifth inning to right center field. The Kings’ designated hitter also hit a three-run home run in the top of the sixth inning that bounced off the right field wall and into the beer garden, to give the Kings the lead for good.

Jason James extended his hit streak to 40 games with an RBI single that scored Jono Brooks in the third inning. James went 2-for-4 with two singles, but Tommy Mejia struck him out in the bottom of the ninth with Matt Mazurek on second base to end the ball game.

Tanner Watson (3-1) took the loss for Rockford, giving up four runs and eight hits in six innings of work for the RiverHawks. Bernard Robert (4-1) picked up the win for the Kings, only allowing two runs on eight hits, and striking out seven in six innings. Tommy Mejia earned his tenth save of the season, giving up one hit and striking out one in the bottom of the ninth inning for Kalamazoo.

The RiverHawks and Kings will close out their series on Sunday afternoon at Road Ranger Stadium. A great pitching matchup is scheduled for Sunday, as East All-Star game starting pitcher John Brownell (6-2, 3.53) will take the hill against Rockford All-Star Kyle Wright (6-1, 1.86). It’s Q98.5 Family Night where kids can run the bases after the game, and the first 500 kids 14 and under through the gates will receive a special 8x10 Jason James player card sponsored by Capture Photography and Dr. Pepper. Sunday also is Belvidere Youth Baseball Night.
