RiverHawks snap skid with 4-3 win

June 3, 2009 - YPSILANTI, Mich. – Kyle Wright pitched eight strong innings and via singles, steals and sacrifices, the Rockford RiverHawks manufactured enough offense to support him. The RiverHawks beat the Midwest Sliders of Ypsilanti, 4-3, on Wednesday to end a record-tying, eight-game losing streak.

Jason James had two hits, including his second home run of the season. Other than that, the RiverHawks eeked out a run at a time. Rockford utilized the sacrifice bunt to help generate three of their runs.

Mike Goetz led off the game with an infield single, went to second base on a bunt, stole third and scored on James’ sacrifice fly. In the third, Jono Brooks single, advanced on a sacrifice and a steal and scored when Goetz hit a sacrifice fly. James made it 3-0 with his leadoff home run in the fourth inning.

In the bottom of the fourth, Roberto Mena got Ypsilanti on the board with a two-run, two-run single to left-center field.

The RiverHawks picked up an insurance run in the eighth when Brooks walked, moved up on a bunt and a wild pitched and Goetz followed with a RBI single.

Wright (1-1) gave up nine hits over eight innings, but only one for extra bases. He recorded 12 groundball outs. John Muller pitched a perfect ninth inning for his third save.

Kyle Kearcher (1-1) gave up eight hits over 7 2/3 innings and took the loss.

The losing streak had tied the longest in team history. The RiverHawks lost eight straight July 28-Aug. 5, 2003.

The rubber match of the three-game series is at 6:05 p.m. CDT Thursday.

The RiverHawks return home on Tuesday, June 9 for a six-game homestand. It starts with a 7:05 p.m. game against Windy City. It’s Faith Night, when area churches and religious groups are invited to attend the game, courtesy of an anonymous donor. In addition, it’s a Two-For Tuesday, when hot dogs are two for the price of one.

The RiverHawks are members of the Frontier League, a 12-team independent professional baseball league that will play its 17th season this summer. The RiverHawks play their home opener at 7:05 p.m. May 26 against the Midwest Sliders of Ypsilanti. The RiverHawks host the 2009 Frontier League All-Star Game at 7:05 p.m. on July 15.
