February 11, 2009 - LOVES PARK, Ill. – Olmo Rosario, who blossomed in the Rockford RiverHawks’ playoff run five years ago, has re-signed with the San Francisco Giants.

Rosario hit .298 with 11 home runs and 51 RBI while playing five positions for the Giants' Double-A Connecticut affiliate in 2008 and was picked for the Eastern League all-star game. Following the season, he exercised his right to minor-league free agency as a player with six or more years of professional experience.

Rosario, primarily a shortstop for the RiverHawks in 2004-05, also played second base, third base, left field and right field last year for the Defenders.

Rosario played primarily shortstop for the RiverHawks in 2004-05. During the RiverHawks’ run to the 2004 Frontier League pennant, Rosario hit .429 during the postseason and was voted Finals Most Valuable Player. The following season, Rosario hit a team-record .373 and was voted into the Frontier League All-Star Game.

The Giants signed Rosario after he won the independent Can-Am League MVP award with Nashua in 2007. Rosario, 28, began his professional career with the Tampa Bay organization in 2001.

Rosario is one of six former RiverHawks currently playing affiliated baseball. The others are: pitchers Justin Dowdy (Oakland), Derrick Ellison (Milwaukee), Reed Dickert (Milwaukee) and Taylor Sinclair (Arizona) and catcher Christian Rosa (St. Louis). Dowdy finished last year in Class AAA with the Athletics’ Sacramento affiliate.

The RiverHawks are members of the Frontier League, a 12-team independent professional baseball league that will play its 17th season this summer. The RiverHawks will begin their eighth season at 7:05 p.m. May 21 at Windy City and play their home opener at 7:05 p.m. May 26 against the Midwest Sliders of Ypsilanti. The RiverHawks host the 2009 Frontier League All-Star Game at 7:05 p.m. on July 15. Advertising and season-ticket information is available by calling (815) 885-2255.
