RiverHawks trade all-star Bauer to Sioux City

September 9, 2008 - LOVES PARK, Ill. – The Rockford RiverHawks have traded their all-time strikeout leader.

The RiverHawks announced Tuesday that they have dealt two-time all-star pitcher Garrett Bauer to Sioux City of the American Association to complete an earlier trade for pitcher Mike McTamney. Bauer turned 27 on Sept. 4 and had reached the Frontier League’s age limit of 27.

Bauer was 10-6 this season for Rockford and struck out 151 batters, the most by a left-hander in Frontier League history. Bauer, with 317 strikeouts in three seasons with the RiverHawks, has the team’s career record and is 12th on the Frontier League’s all-time list. He won 23 times in a Rockford uniform, tied with Tanner Watson for the all-time lead.

"“He did a great job for us and we hate to lose him, but he had aged out of the league," owner and director of baseballl operations Dave Ciarrachi said.

This season, Bauer was second in the league in strikeouts and five short of the league record of 156 set by the RiverHawks’ Jason Shelley in 2002. Bauer became just the third pitcher in league history to reach the 150-strikeout mark. Bauer made his second appearance in the Frontier League All-Star Game. He was the West Division’s starting pitcher in 2006.

Bauer set new team single-season records for starts, innings, home runs allowed, and walks. He set new career marks for starts, innings, hits, runs, earned runs and home runs allowed. Bauer also tied the record for most career losses. He leaves the Frontier League with a record 198 career walks, a single-season record 78 this season, but he is the only RiverHawk to lead the team in strikeouts twice.

The new records, along with the old standards, are on the team records page.

The RiverHawks are members of the Frontier League, a 12-team independent professional baseball league that will play its 17th season in 2009. The RiverHawks will host the Frontier League All-Star Game at 7:05 p.m. July 15, 2009. Advertising and season-ticket information is available by calling (815) 885-2255.
