RiverHawks eliminated from playoff hunt

September 1, 2008 - CRESTWOOD, Ill. – The Rockford RiverHawks will miss the playoffs for the first time since 2003.

The RiverHawks lost, 7-0, on Monday at Windy City to extend their losing streak to four games. Meanwhile, Gateway beat Southern Illinois, 7-4, to mathematically eliminate Rockford from contention for the last Frontier League playoff spot with two games left to play.

The defending champion ThunderBolts have already clinched a playoff spot but are in a fight for seeding.

Windy City starter Stephen Flake pitched a four-hit shutout. Flake (10-3) struck out six and walked one.

Rockford starter Peden Rucker (3-3) lasted just three innings and gave up four runs, two of them earned. In the first inning, Gil Mejia singled, went to second on an error and scored on a Scott Billak single. Danny Sawyer hit a two-run homer in the second inning and Mike Coles led off the third with a home run.

Mike Sullivan added a home run in the eighth inning for the ThunderBolts.

The series continues at 7:05 p.m. Tuesday.
