Hawks swept by Grizzlies

August 31, 2008 - SAUGET, IL- Mike Breyman hit his fifth career grand slam, and drove in five runs Sunday night as the Gateway Grizzlies completed a three-game sweep of the Rockford RiverHawks. The Grizzlies downed Rockford 14-7 in front of 4,918 at GCS Ballpark.

The win gives the Gateway (49-44) a one-game lead on the Hawks (48-45) and Traverse City for the final wild card spot in the Frontier League. There are three regular season games to play.

The Grizzlies scored their 14 runs on 17 hits.

Breyman was 3-4 with a game-high five RBIs. The grand slam was part of a seven-run seventh inning. It was his 24th home run of the year. He now leads the league with 86 RBIs. He has 312 for his Frontier League career that is tied with Fran Riordan for the most in league history.

The Grizzlies got a five-run first inning and built a 7-0 lead going into the fourth.

The RiverHawks scored seven unanswered to even the score at 7-7 going into the seventh inning.

They scored three in the fourth thanks in part to a two-run homer by Tony Gonzalez. Gonzalez capped a three-run fifth inning with a two-run double. He finished the night 3-4 with five RBIs.

Shannon Sprouse (1-0) earned his first win in a Grizzlies uniform. Sprouse tossed two innings in relief allowing a run on two hits.

Tim Flattery (2-5) suffered the loss in relief. Flattery allowed two runs in 3.1 innings.

The Hawks conclude the regular season with a three-game series starting Monday night at Windy City.
