RiverHawks rally, edge Florence, 4-3

August 20, 2008 - LOVES PARK, Ill. – A relatively routine grounder turned out to be anything but on Wednesday.

Florence first baseman Kelly Hunt mishandled Brandon Cohen’s two-out, bases-loaded grounder in the bottom of the ninth, then threw it away. Two runs scored on the single-error combination as the Rockford RiverHawks beat the Freedom, 4-3.

The walkoff victory at Road Ranger Stadium kept Rockford four games back of Traverse City in the chase for the fourth and final Frontier League playoff spot. Traverse City beat visiting River City, 11-4.

Florence built a 3-1 lead on Hunt’s league-leading 25th home run of the season, a two-out, two-run liner to center field in the first inning and Billy Mottram’s leadoff homer in the fourth.

Florence closer Cody Castle (1-3) gave up three runs in the ninth and blew the save. Matt Mazurek led off with a single and went to third on Joe Anthonsen’s bloop single. Jono Brooks drove in Mazurek with a sacrifice fly. Jason James singled Anthonsen to third. With two outs, rookie Mike Scripture drew a walk on a 3-2 pitch and Cohen hit the grounder to Hunt. Hunt threw it past Castle. Anthonsen and James scored on the play.

Rockford reliever Kyffin Marcum (6-1) retired all five batters he faced and won in relief.

The series finale is at 7:05 p.m. Thirsty Thursday. It’s Miller Lite/104.9 – the X Dollar Beer Night, Military Appreciation Night and Rockford Chamber Night. In addition, it’s ‘70s Night. Fans are invited to show up in their funkiest ‘70s apparel. If so, they’ll get in for half price. All the greatest hits of the 1970s will be played on the PA system.
