August 14, 2008 - LOVES PARK, Ill. – Four Southern Illinois pitchers combined to strike out 17 Rockford batters on Thursday as the Miners beat the RiverHawks, 7-1.
The Miners completed a three-game series sweep, in front of a near-sellout crowd of 3,071 at Road Ranger Stadium. They lead the fourth-place RiverHawks by eight games in the Frontier League West. Rockford trails Gateway by two games for the final playoff spot. The Grizzlies lost, 9-4, at Evansville.
Chris Little (7-3) struck out eight and walked one over five innings of three-hit ball and left with a 5-0 lead.
Rockford starter Mathew Wilson (0-1) struck out six in his professional debut, but walked five and threw four wild pitches. Kevin Koski led off the first inning with a single and the fifth with a double. Each time, he scored on a wild pitch. Later in the fifth, Brendan Akashian singled in a run and Brandon Jones singled in two. Wilson left a batter later.
Jason James broke the shutout with a two-out RBI double in the eighth inning.
The RiverHawks open a three-game series at River City at 7:05 p.m. Friday.
