July 18, 2008 - LOVES PARK, Ill. – The Rockford RiverHawks kick off the second half of the Frontier League season with a visit from a Hall of Famer, fireworks, baseball cards, bobblehead dolls and still more fireworks.
The three-game homestand against River City starts at 7:05 p.m. Friday. Culver’s and 104.9 – the X sponsor RiverHawks Baseball Card Night III. Early arrivals also receive a clicker on IDOT Click It or Ticket Night. The FatWallet.com Friday Night Fireworks Series follows the game.
Former Chicago Cub Ferguson Jenkins, in cooperation with the Rockford RiverHawks, Little Cubs Field and the city of Freeport, will appear at both stadiums on Saturday. In addition, the RiverHawks will offer a bobblehead doll featuring Jenkins at their game that night.
The RiverHawks and the city of Freeport have teamed up for Freeport Night at that night’s 7:05 p.m. game against River City at Road Ranger Stadium. Tickets for that night’s game are available for sale through Little Cubs Field, as well as the Road Ranger Stadium box office.
The day’s events will promote Little Cubs Field, a Wrigley Field replica scaled for youth baseball, located in Freeport. Jenkins will make an appearance there from 9 a.m. to noon. Among the events in Freeport Jenkins will participate in are a pitching clinic, an autograph show and an opportunity to hit a home run off the 1971 National League Cy Young Award winner. For a $31 donation to Little Cubs Field, fans can take three swings against Jenkins. Rocko the RiverHawk, along with several players, will attend the event as well. Comcast Sportsnet Chicago will be present.
At the RiverHawks’ game that night, the first 1,000 fans will receive bobblehead dolls, sponsored by Little Cubs Field, featuring Jenkins. Jenkins, who will throw out a ceremonial first pitch, will also autograph his bobblehead in exchange for a donation. Half of each donation will go to the Fergie Jenkins Foundation and half to Little Cubs Field. Gates open at 5:30 p.m. and Jenkins will be available for autographs from 5:30-6:50 p.m. Jenkins will also join the RiverHawks radio broadcast on WNTA (1330 AM) for the third inning.
“We have established a great relationship with Fergie and the Fergie Jenkins Foundation and are always open to having him back out at Road Ranger Stadium year after year,” RiverHawks assistant general manager for marketing Marshall Mackinder said. “It is great that he will be on hand for his bobblehead night for what is sure to be a packed house yet again.”
Jenkins won the 1971 Cy Young Award while with Chicago. He won 20 or more games six consecutive years, 1967-72. Jenkins’ 3,192 strikeouts is 12th on the career list. He was a three-time All-Star with the Cubs and pitched for three other teams in a 19-year career. Jenkins went into Cooperstown in 1991.
At Sunday’s 6:05 p.m. game, the Power Connection has bought out the stadium. The first 500 kids through the gate receive RiverHawks Little League bats, courtesy of WREX, the Power Connection and Kmart. It’s also Family Night, when kids get to run the bases after the game.
