June 29, 2008 - LOVES PARK, Ill. – The margin between first place in the Frontier League West and the rest of the division got a tad wider on Sunday.

Gateway took an early lead and went on to beat the Rockford RiverHawks, 8-3, in front of a near-sellout crowd of 2,477 at Road Ranger Stadium.

The Grizzlies, Windy City and River City entered Sunday tied for first, with everybody else just a game back. With the loss, the RiverHawks dropped two games under .500. Rockford has lost three in a row.

Gateway scored twice in the first inning on a Ryne Malone RBI single and a Manny Paula sacrifice fly. Rockford starter Jason James gave up an unearned run in the second inning. After James walked the bases loaded in the third, but escaped the inning on a double play, the RiverHawks moved James to left field and went to the bullpen. Mike Breyman singled home two runs in the fourth inning to extend Gateway’s lead to 5-0.

James (1-4) failed to reach the middle innings for the second start in a row. At the plate, he was 2-for-5 and got Rockford on the board with a RBI single in the fifth inning.

Gateway starter Adam Revelette (2-0) gave up two unearned runs in the seventh inning, but the bullpen held the RiverHawks scoreless the rest of the way.

The series finale is at 7:05 p.m. Monday on WIFR Sellout Night. WIFR has purchased every available seat in the stadium and has offered them free to the community. Standing room-only tickets are all that remain, as the RiverHawks will attempt to break their stadium and franchise records for largest crowd.

The RiverHawks are members of the Frontier League, a 12-team independent professional baseball league in its 16th season.
