June 25, 2008 - MARION, Ill. – The RiverHawks blew a five-run lead and endured a ninth-inning collapse but rallied to top Southern Illinois 7-6 in 11 innings Wednesday.

Jason James’ RBI groundout in the 11th plated Jono Brooks with the winning run. Matt Enderle (2-1) earned the win with two shutout innings in relief. Griffin Bailey (3-2) suffered the loss.

Brooks led off the top of the 11th with a bloop double bobbled by Miners second baseman Tony Roth. Brooks advanced to third when Joe Anthonsen lined out to right and third baseman Brandon Jones bobbled the throw from right. Pinch-hitter Scott Talbert was hit by a pitch to put runners at the corners with one out, setting the stage for James.

Roy Bringelson blew the save in the ninth when he allowed successive run-scoring hits from Tim Dorn, Brad Goldsmith and Mike Victor to tie the game at six. The rally ruined a strong start by Peden Rucker, making his first professional start. He allowed three earned runs over 5 2/3 innings.

The RiverHawks scored first in the second. Aaron Davis led off with a single off Nick Starnes (1-4). One out later, Davis stole second and scored on Brad Dutton’s double.

Rockford took a 2-0 lead in the third. Anthonsen singled, advanced on Matt Borman’s groundout and scored on Robert Sabates’ double.

Brad Miller’s run-scoring single in the third off Rucker cut the lead in half.

Up 2-1, Brooks blasted his third home run of the year, a two-out, two-run shot in the fourth to give Rockford a 4-1 advantage.

The Miners handed Rockford a pair of runs in the sixth. Davis walked to start the frame before Chris Raber struck out. Dutton hit a grounder to second which Roth bobbled for an error. Two-out singles by Brooks and Anthonsen gave the RiverHawks a 6-1 edge.

Brendan Akashian’s two-run triple in the sixth pulled the Miners within 6-3.

The road trip continues at 7:05 p.m. Thursday at Southern Illinois for game two of the three-game set.

The RiverHawks return home Saturday, June 28 for the start of a three-game series against Gateway and a six-game homestand. The first 1000 fans receive a Billy Williams bobblehead, sponsored by Dr. Pepper, BOB FM and WIFR.
