RiverHawks drop another in extras

May 28, 2008 - O’FALLON, Mo. – Another late-inning rally, another extra innings affair and another loss for the RiverHawks thanks to Brad Hough.

One night after drilling a walk-off homer in the 11th inning, Hough’s two-out RBI single in the bottom of the 10th scored Greg Stone to give the Rascals a 5-4 win. River City has now won five consecutive games; Rockford has dropped three straight.

Stone led off the tenth with a base hit off of Matt Enderle (0-1) and advanced to second on Jacob DeBoer’s sacrifice. After Phil Laurent fouled out, Hough hit a sharp grounder to third off the glove of Jeff Thamann, plating the winning run.

Mike Benacka (1-0) picked up the win with 2 1/3 innings of scoreless work.

Jason James’ two-out two-run single in the third gave the RiverHawks the early lead, but Chris Raniere answered with a two-run homer in the fifth.

The Rascals took the lead in the sixth. Laurent led off the frame with a single to right. Hough struck out, and Bobby Mosby singled to center. Jeff Miller hit what looked like an inning-ending double-play grounder to Chris Raber at first, but the ball scooted by Raber’s glove, scoring Laurent. Andrew Sweet followed with a single off the wall in left to score Mosby for a 4-2 lead.

The RiverHawks rallied in the eighth. Corey Stang hit a one-out double, and Steve Pickerell added a two-out single. Matt Mazurek followed with a base hit to center, scoring Stang. Mazurek was then caught off of first base, but first baseman Jeff Miller’s throwing error in the rundown allowed Pickerell to score to tie the game at four.

Rockford starter Jim Paduch had no decision despite tying a career high with eight strikeouts in six innings. The right-hander allowed all four runs on eight hits and one walk.

The series concludes Thursday with another 7:05 p.m. start. The RiverHawks come back home for a fatwallet.com Friday night to start a seven-game home stand, beginning with a contest against Southern Illinois at 7:05 p.m. Fireworks follow the game.
