February 6, 2008 - LOVES PARK, Ill. – Late-blooming Brandon Cohen is back in the fold for another season.
The Rockford RiverHawks announced Wednesday that they have exercised their 2008 option on the outfielder/first baseman. Cohen hit .273 with nine home runs and 29 RBI as a rookie.
Much of that production came in the closing weeks of the season. In 20 games from August 1 through the end of the regular season, Cohen hit .345. He homered in each end of a critical doubleheader sweep last Aug. 23 at Southern Illinois.
The Seton Hall alumnus also had a memorable moment early in the season. Last June 23, Cohen became the first RiverHawk to homer to the right-field beer garden at Road Ranger Stadium, which opened in 2006. Cohen’s two-run shot, in the eighth inning, gave the RiverHawks a 4-3 win over visiting Florence. The win, Rockford’s fourth in a row at the time, became part of a season-best nine-game winning streak.
The RiverHawks are members of the Frontier League, a 12-team independent professional baseball league that will play its 16th season in 2008. Most games are broadcast live on WNTA (1330 AM) and the internet. Advertising and season-ticket information is available by calling the box office at (815) 885-2255.
