Hononegah alum among new RiverHawks

January 9, 2008 - LOVES PARK, Ill. – The Rockford RiverHawks announced the signings of three players, including a local product, on Wednesday.

Pitchers Matt Enderle, from South Beloit, and Drew Himes, along with infielder A.J. Reed, will report for spring training in May.

Enderle and Reed have no professional experience. Himes has Rookie-2 status in the Frontier League.

Himes pitched briefly in the Frontier League with both Gateway and Rockford last season. He had no record and a 12.27 earned-run average in three appearances with the RiverHawks.

Houston selected Himes out of Illinois Wesleyan University in the 19th round of the 2005 draft. He was 3-0 with a 6.37 ERA in 17 relief appearances that summer at Tri-City of the short-season Class A New York-Penn League. He had a brief stint with Gateway late in the 2006 season. The right-hander has a career 2-to-1 strikeout-to-walk ratio.

Enderle, a Rockton Hononegah graduate, played college ball at Highland Community College and at St. Joseph’s College. While at Highland, the southpaw was a 2005 all-conference and all-region pitcher for RiverHawks bullpen coach Sam Knaack, who was Highland’s head coach at the time. Last year, as a senior at St. Joe’s, Enderle was 8-3 with a 2.42 ERA in 13 appearances for the Division II school.

Reed hit .277 with no home runs and 32 RBI last spring at the University of North Alabama.

The RiverHawks are members of the Frontier League, a 12-team independent professional baseball league that will play its 16th season this summer.
