RiverHawks hold off Paints, 5-2

June 21, 2007 - LOVES PARK, Ill. – The Rockford RiverHawks scored four times in the first inning and held on to beat Chillicothe, 5-2, Thursday at Road Ranger Stadium.

The RiverHawks, who took two of three from the Paints, picked up their first series win of the season, in front of a near-sellout crowd of 3,106. Closer Mike Marksbury got out of a bases-loaded, one-out jam in the ninth inning on a game-ending double play.

Rockford scored four two-out runs in the first inning. Will Henderson singled in a run, another scored on an error and Joey Huskins followed with a two-run single.

Chillicothe got a run back in the second inning on a two-out RBI single from Dan Cummins. Rockford starter Tanner Watson held them off for the remainder of his seven innings. Watson (1-0) struck out five, walked three and scattered six hits in his second appearance.

Chillicothe starter Jesse Marshall, who made his professional debut, lasted three innings and took the loss.

Jon Poterson homered in the eighth for the Paints, but the RiverHawks picked up an unearned insurance run in the bottom of the inning. The Paints put the tying runs on base in the ninth, but Marksbury picked up his sixth save when he got Travis Garcia to hit into a double play.

Florence comes in for a three-game series beginning at 7:05 p.m. on FatWallet.com/WIFR Fireworks Friday. In addition, Mincemoyer Jewelry and BOB-FM sponsor RiverHawks Logo Lapel Pin Night.
