RiverHawks retain Arndt, add Mongiardo to staff

November 13, 2006 - LOVES PARK, Ill. – The Rockford RiverHawks announced today that they have retained manager J.D. Arndt and added a former Frontier League skipper to the coaching staff.

Former Richmond manager Chris Mongiardo will join Arndt’s staff as the pitching coach.

Arndt, a rookie manager in 2006, led the RiverHawks to their second Frontier League West title in three years and their third consecutive playoff appearance. The RiverHawks were 49-47 during the regular season. Arndt managed the West Division in the All-Star Game, where seven of his players appeared.

“J.D. did a good job for us last year and we’re happy to have him back,” RiverHawks owner Dave Ciarrachi said. “He takes pride in the organization and pride in putting together an aggressive, character-building team.”

Arndt has been on the Rockford staff since 2003, when he was hired as hitting coach. His extensive amateur experience includes stops as the hitting coach at Missouri Baptist University and as the head coach of the Athletes in Action team in the Alaska League, a NCAA-sanctioned summer league for college players.

Mongiardo managed the Roosters from 2003 until they relocated to Traverse City following the 2005 season. He had a composite record of 132-148 and is 14th on the Frontier League’s all-time managerial wins list. He spent the past season as the pitching coach at Gary of the independent Northern League.

“In my years in the league observing Richmond, I felt that he was one of the hardest workers in the Frontier League,” Ciarrachi said. “He did whatever it took on the field to make his team competitive. He impressed me with his dedication to the sport.”

Mongiardo replaces Derek Roper, who retired after he doubled as pitching coach and the team’s staff ace in 2006.

The RiverHawks are the defending Western Division champions of the Frontier League, an 11-team independent professional baseball league that will play its 15th season in 2007.
