RiverHawks' comeback falls short in 9-8 loss
« Back

September 8, 2006 - EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The Rockford RiverHawks had a chance to sweep the Evansville Otters in the Frontier League West Division Series, but didn't make things easy on themselves Friday night.

The Otters pounded starter Garrett Bauer and reliever Dane Towery while taking advantage of several Rockford defensive miscues to grab a 9-2 lead in the fourth inning. The RiverHawks tried to rally, but Richard Quihuis-Bell lined a pitch from closer Mike Bille right back to the mound with the bases loaded and one out in the eighth. Bille made the catch and doubled Bo Flowers off first base to end the inning and the RiverHawks' last scoring threat as Evansville got the 9-8 victory.

Rockford misplayed four balls, three of them wound up as errors, in the first four innings, leading to three unearned runs. Bauer (0-1) was chased with two outs in the fourth inning; he wound up giving up seven of the runs. But Dane Towery did not provide much relief out of the bullpen. Towery gave up two runs of his own as all five men who faced him in the inning reached base.

Flowers provided most of the offense for the RiverHawks. He went 3-for-4 with a home run and five RBI. He walked in the eighth inning to drive in Rockford's final run.

The RiverHawks got nine base hits off Evansville rookie starter Matt Restivo (1-0) as well as four runs in his five innings of work, but just couldn't quite find enough at the end as Bille got his first playoff save by getting Quihuis-Bell to hit into the double play, then pitching around a two-out walk to Jake Bowen in the ninth.

Rockford can still win the series with a win on Saturday in Evansville. The two teams play game four at 7:05. If necessary, game five will be at RiverHawks Stadium in Loves Park on Sunday at 6:05.
