July 24, 2006 - LOVES PARK, Ill. – The Rockford RiverHawks beat the Frontier League’s top home run-hitting team at its own game on Monday.
Outfielders Bo Flowers and Nick Johnson each hit home runs as the RiverHawks beat the Kalamazoo Kings, 8-2.
Flowers hit his third, a leadoff shot off the scoreboard in left-center, in the third inning, off Brandon Mendola. Johnson, a two-time all-star who hit 10 home runs last year but who had been homerless this season, hit a two-run shot to right field in the eighth inning.
Rockford has 23 total home runs, just four more than Kalamazoo center fielder Ian Church’s league-leading 19. Church is 0-for-6 in the series. The Kings, who have hit 67 home runs, most in the league, are homerless in two losses in the series.
The RiverHawks never trailed and drove Mendola (0-2) from the ballgame in the fourth inning. Matt Sauls hit a two-out, two-run double to right-center to break a scoreless tie in the second inning.
Designated hitter Jason James was 2-for-4 with a double and a RBI in his professional debut.
Rockford starter Tanner Watson (5-4) went eight innings for the win. Watson escaped a two-on, one-out jam in the second inning and limited Kalamazoo’s rallies to a sacrifice fly from Kyle Kmiecik in the fourth inning and a sac fly from Church in the fifth.
