July 23, 2006 - LOVES PARK, Ill. – The Rockford RiverHawks rallied early and held off the Kalamazoo Kings, 6-3, Sunday at RiverHawks Stadium.
Joe Anthonsen was 2-for-4 with three stolen bases. He keyed the RiverHawks’ three-run rally in the bottom of the first inning and capped a three-run Rockford sixth. Anthonsen broke a 1-1 tie with a two-out, two-run double to center field in the first inning.
In the sixth, Bo Flowers and Eric Cavers singled home runs. Cavers later stole second and Anthonsen stole home in a delayed double steal. Rockford runners were 7-for-9 in steal attempts.
Rockford starter Derek Roper gave up a Joe Ramos single and a RBI double from Casey Baker to begin the game, but allowed just three more hits over six hits. Roper (4-4) got out of a bases-loaded, one-out jam in the sixth inning when he struck out Jared Johnson and retired Adam Leavitt on a popout.
Kalamazoo starter Chris Perez (2-2) struck out eight to match his career best, but Flowers’ hit in the sixth drove him from the game.
Mike Marksbury pitched a perfect ninth inning for his 10th save.
The series continues at 7:05 p.m. on 97 ZOK Margarita Monday. Margaritas are $3 each. The Fifth Doctors-Lawyers Game, sponsored by Tuite and Associates, is scheduled for 4 p.m.
