RiverHawks sweep River City with 9-3 victory
« Back

July 10, 2006 - O'FALLON, Mo. – Stephen Holdren hit a grand slam and Derek Roper pitched the first complete game of the season for Rockford as the RiverHawks bested the River City Rascals, 9-3, to complete their sweep in O'Fallon.

Holdren's bomb in the third inning opened the scoring in the third inning, and it was all the RiverHawks would need.

All the same, after River City got one back, Gooby Gerlits added some insurance with a solo home run in the fourth.

The Rascals closed to within 5-3 with unearned runs in the fourth and sixth innings, but Gerlits and Ryan Gipson drove in a run each in the eighth inning, then Joe Anthonsen drove in two more in the ninth to give Roper more than enough breathing room.

Roper (3-4) gave up just one earned run in the nine innings to pick up the win. He struck out four and did not walk a batter.

Steve Brook (3-2) gave up five runs in six innings for the Rascals in the loss.

The true rookie Gipson, playing in just his second professional game, went 3-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored.

Rockford heads into the all-star break having won four in a row and 3 1/2 games ahead of second-place Gateway. Seven RiverHawks will make the trip to Evansville for the Frontier League All Star Game, and the Rockford coaching staff will be in charge of the West Division team.

The 'Hawks return to action on Friday in Washington, where they will stay for a three-game series. They will return home on Monday, July 17, for a three-game set with Gateway. The 17th is the annual Dog Days of Summer at RiverHawks Stadium, sponsored by Petco, where fans can bring their dogs to the park. It's also another Margarita Monday sponsored by WZOK. On Tuesday, Indy Racing League star Danica Patrick will be at RiverHawks Stadium to sign copies of her book, "Danica: Crossing the Line," as well as to take part in the annual Jersey Auction to benefit the Muscular Dystrophy Association.
