RiverHawks shake up roster

June 20, 2006 - LOVES PARK, Ill. – The Rockford RiverHawks stayed busy during Monday’s off day. The team today announced three player releases and three signings.

The RiverHawks signed infielders Scott Lefler and Steve Holdren, as well as catcher Chris Lewis. They made room on the roster by releasing infielders Mayke Cabrera, Joe Besl and Bart Hunton.

Lefler is the only one of the three with prior professional experience, all in the Frontier League. The third-year professional has one-year status in the league. The third baseman hit .273 with nine home runs and 33 RBI in 161 at-bats with Chillicothe last year. Lefler committed 12 errors. He began 2006 with Windy City. He hit .226 with a home run and five RBI in 62 at-bats.

Holdren is a 23-year-old rookie out of Texas A&M and Butler Community College. Lewis attended St. Mary’s University in San Antonio. He was in spring training with the St. Louis organization earlier this year.

Cabrera, acquired from Calgary in the April Olmo Rosario trade, hit .275 with no home runs and two RBI. Besl hit .200 with no home runs and one RBI. Hunton batted .226 with no home runs and eight RBI.

The RiverHawks are members of the Frontier League, a 10-team independent professional baseball league in its 14th season.
