Martin homers as RiverHawks rally, 9-6

June 18, 2009 - EVANSVILLE, Ind. – Todd Martin delivered the thunder not too long before Mother Nature did.

The Rockford first baseman hit a go-ahead, three-run homer in the top of the seventh inning. The RiverHawks left Wednesday afternoon’s matinee at Bosse Field with a rain-shortened, 9-6 victory after play was halted because of a brief but severe thunderstorm in the bottom of the eighth.

Martin hit his first home run for Rockford and drove in six runs. He was 2-for-3 with a sacrifice fly.

Rockford trailed, 6-2, after four innings but rallied for two runs in the sixth inning and four more in the seventh. In the seventh, Ross McCoy singled home a run to trim the deficit to one. Tom Mueller came out of the bullpen with two on and two outs. Martin greeted him with a home run just out of the reach of wall-scaling right fielder Dustin Koca.

McCoy was 3-for-5 to extend his hitting streak to six games. Jason James was 1-for-5 and extended his streak to a career-best 15 games.

Rockford added an unearned insurance run in the eighth on a RBI double by Doug Sanders, who also has a six-game streak.

Former Rockford College star Fabian Gomez (1-1) pitched 3 1/3 innings of scoreless relief to get the victory. The Otters scored five times, twice on Matt Pulley’s two-out single off Gomez, in the fourth to take a four-run lead.

Nick Utley (1-2) lost in relief.

The RiverHawks head to Sauget for a three-game series against the Gateway Grizzlies. The series starts at 7:05 p.m. Thursday.

The RiverHawks return home for a three-game series against Evansville at 4:05 p.m. Sunday as the RiverHawks celebrate Father’s Day. The first 1,000 receive a RiverHawks logo baseball, great for autographs or for catch. Before the game, fathers and kids can play catch on the field. After the game, players will also autograph balls. Don't forget the early start times for Sunday games this year. As always, kids get to run the bases following Sunday games. Sponsored by OSF, Q98.5, and Fox 39.
