February 24, 2009 - Although he won't be playing for his native Australia next month in the World Baseball Classic, Brad Dutton will be playing baseball overseas this year.
The former Rockford RiverHawk has signed to play in Germany for the Gauting Indians, members of the German Baseball-Bundesliga. Dutton, who was on the Aussie's provisional WBC roster, was left off the final 28-man roster announced Tuesday.
The infielder has starred on both sides of the Pacific the last few years. Dutton hit .311 for the RiverHawks last season and .279 in a three-year career with Rockford. At the time his rights were traded to Gary of the independent Northern League following the season, he 234 career hits, good for fifth on the RiverHawks' all-time list.
After the Frontier League season, Dutton returned to his homeland and played for his home state of Queensland in the Claxton Shield, the national baseball tournament. Dutton hit .393 in 16 games as the Rams' starting shortstop. The previous winter, he hit .310 for Queensland and was picked by the national team to play shortstop in Australia's ultimately unsuccessful bid to get through the Taiwan qualifying tournament and into the Beijing Olympics.
Dutton is the second former RiverHawk to play in Europe. Rich Austin, the team's all-time home-run leader and 2004 Frontier League Player of the Year, led the Italian pro league, Serie A, in home runs last year. |
