June 8, 2008 - KALAMAZOO, Mich. – Former RiverHawk John Brownell earned his Frontier League-leading fourth win on Sunday as the Kalamazoo Kings beat Rockford, 6-1, on Sunday.
The Kings salvaged the finale of a three-game series, a contest delayed more than two hours after a pregame thunderstorm hit Homer Stryker Field.
Brownell (4-0) scattered four hits and pitched his first career complete game. He allowed an unearned run in the third inning, but pitched out of jams in the fifth, sixth, seventh and ninth. The RiverHawks left seven runners in scoring position and left the bases loaded in the ninth.
Rockford starter Jason James (1-3) walked three in a row in the fourth inning, including Kyle Kmiecik with the bases loaded to force home the go-ahead run. The Kings added two runs in the fifth and one in the sixth to create some breathing room.
Rockford second baseman Joe Anthonsen drove in Rockford’s lone run on a third-inning single. Anthonsen was 2-for-2 and extended his hitting streak to five games before he was ejected in the seventh inning. Anthonsen was 7-for-10 in the series.
Joe Ramos hit a first-inning home run for the Kings.
The RiverHawks are off on Monday. They start a three-game series in Traverse City at 6:05 p.m. CDT Tuesday. The RiverHawks return home at 7:05 p.m. Friday for a game against the Kings.
