August 30, 2007 - KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Rockford RiverHawks didn’t get a win out of their ace pitcher on Thursday, but a hurler just off the plane pitched like one.
Kalamazoo stunned the RiverHawks with a come-from-behind, 7-6 defeat of Tanner Watson in the opener of a doubleheader. Newly signed Reed Dickert made his Rockford debut in the nightcap and struck out 14 in a complete-game shutout. The RiverHawks won the second game, 2-0, and are 1½ games behind Kalamazoo in the chase for the Frontier League’s last playoff spot.
Rockford must win four of the remaining five games in the season-ending series to reach the playoffs.
In the opener, the RiverHawks rallied for three runs in the sixth inning. With two outs, Justus Kimbrough tied the game at 5-5 with a RBI single and scored the go-ahead run on Jono Brooks’ RBI double to the corner in left field.
In the bottom of the sixth, Watson (10-3) gave up a game-tying RBI double to Jeff Grose and a go-ahead RBI double to Joe Ramos.
Jon Troop (3-1) won in relief.
In the nightcap, Dickert gave up two infield singles – a leadoff hit by Grose in the first inning and bunt single by Simon Williams in the fifth – and retired 13 straight batters between them. He walked two, twice struck out three in a row and recorded the highest strikeout total by a RiverHawk since Justin Dowdy struck out 15 against Springfield on May 26, 2004. The team record of 16 was set by Jason Shelley on July 22, 2002 at Canton.
Trent Lare (5-3) struck out eight and tossed a five-hitter, but lost a complete-game effort. In the sixth inning, Rockford loaded the bases with no outs without a hit. Matt Hagen singled past the drawn-in infield to drive home both Rockford runs.
Hagen was 3-for-6 in the doubleheader. He hit his team-leading 13th home run in the opener.
The RiverHawks and Kings play again at 6:05 p.m. CDT. The broadcast of the game has been preempted. Fans are advised to visit the Frontier League website and tune to the Kalamazoo webcast.
