January 23, 2009 - LOVES PARK, Ill. – Former Rockford RiverHawk Brad Dutton continues to gain exposure overseas.

The infielder was named this week to Australia’s provisional roster for the World Baseball Classic, scheduled to begin March 5. Sixteen nations and territories, including the United States, participate in the tournament. John Danks of the Chicago White Sox and Kosuke Fukedome of the Chicago Cubs are among the major-leaguers also on provisional rosters. Dutton is one of five former Frontier League players, including Baltimore closer George Sherrill, listed.

Dutton is coming off of a breakout performance in the Claxton Shield, Australia’s national championship. Although his native Queensland went 8-8 and did not advance to the semifinals, Dutton hit .393 – second only to his brother Wade Dutton’s .425 – with no home runs and eight RBI. Dutton, Queensland’s starting shortstop, committed four errors. He led the tournament in nine offensive categories and tied for the lead in two others.

Last winter, Dutton hit .310 in the Claxton Shield and was selected by the national team to play shortstop in the Olympic qualifier last March.

The WBC, previously held in 2006, is scheduled for March 5-23 with games to be played San Diego, Miami, Tokyo, Toronto, Mexico City and San Juan, Puerto Rico. The championship game is scheduled for May 23 at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles. Danks will represent the United States and Fukedome will play for defending champion Japan. Traditional baseball powers Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Venezuela, 2008 Olympic gold medalist Korea and Chinese Tapei, along with Canada, China, Italy, Mexico, The Netherlands, Panama and South Africa, will participate in the WBC.

In addition to Dutton, former Frontier League pitchers Sherrill (USA), Chris Oxspring (Australia) and Chris Begg (Canada), infielder Ben Risinger (Australia) were also on this week’s provisional rosters. Sherrill pitched for the Evansville Otters in 1999-2000.
