July 7, 2006 - LOVES PARK, Ill. – Eric Cavers turned his night around with one swing of the bat on Friday.

Cavers hit a walkoff, three-run homer in the bottom of the 10th inning to cap a four-run rally and give the Rockford RiverHawks a 6-3 win over the Gateway Grizzlies. In the top of the 10th, the Rockford catcher had dropped a ball at home plate and allowed the Grizzlies to take the lead.

The RiverHawks salvaged the finale of the three-game series, in front of 2,431 at RiverHawks Stadium. The Frontier League West leaders increased their lead on the second-place Grizzlies to 1½ games.

Cavers was 2-for-4 with four RBI.

Rockford did not trail until the 10th. Rico Santana led off the fourth inning with his fifth home run of the season. Cavers later singled in a run with two outs.

The Grizzlies rallied for single runs in the sixth and eighth innings, then scored an unearned run in the 10th. Brooks Colvin hit a sacrifice fly to right field to score Dustin Roberts. In a close play at the plate, Cavers dropped the baseball when he tagged Roberts.

In the bottom of the 10th, Bo Flowers’ pinch-hit sacrifice fly tied the game. Cavers followed with a two-on, two-out shot well past the left-field wall off Gateway closer Todd Pennington. Pennington (0-1) had not blown a save in his first 11 chances.

Rockford’s Adam Kroft (3-2) won in relief.

The RiverHawks head to River City for a three-game series that begins at 7:05 p.m. Saturday. They do not return until July 17, for Petco/WZOK Dog Days of Summer, when fans are invited to bring their pooches to the park.
