Winter update - Jason James
« Back

February 6, 2009 - Baseball season can’t arrive soon enough for RiverHawks outfielder Jason James.

He’s been to the East Coast this winter. He’s dabbled in hockey. But most days find him on a couch in Ohio, tuned into ESPN.

“I’m a big Sportscenter guy,” James said. “I don’t turn on much else. ESPN usually keeps me on the couch.

“I get bored too easily, I’ve got to get out of the house.”

So far, the two-time Frontier League All-Star has made a trip to Boston, but most of the winter, he’s been staying with his father, Mike, in suburban Cleveland. At the time of the interview, the area had just received a heavy snowstorm, reinforcing the cabin fever.

“That’s the tough thing about baseball – when the season’s over is when the weather gets bad,” James said.

Part of James’ efforts to keep himself occupied include weight lifting, something he typically shies away from during the season.

“I’m not a big weight guy,” James said. “During the summer, I just try to stay as fresh as possible.”

James also keeps loose with pickup hockey games on an outdoor rink with his 12-year-old brother, John. James gave hockey a try as a kid, but said he never had an interest in wearing skates for a living – it’s much more fun to watch than to be in the line of fire.

“I played hockey for a year, but I was like ‘Get me out of here; I’m never playing hockey again,” he said. “I’m not too bad, but I don’t want people coming at me.”

James, whose home is in Vernon Hills, about 90 minutes from Rockford, says he goes to as many Chicago Bulls and Blackhawks games as possible. The former Kishwaukee College player said he plans to return to the area in March.
