08/13/2012 8:03 AM - JOLIET, Ill. – David Christensen and Erik Lis each hit a home run as the Joliet Slammers beat the Rockford RiverHawks, 8-4, on Sunday at Silver Cross Field.

Christensen wiped out an early Rockford lead with a second-inning moonshot. Lis hit a two-run homer to provide late insurance runs.

The RiverHawks scored in the second inning on a two-out RBI double by Justino Cuevas. Christensen tied the game in the bottom of the inning with a towering shot onto the second-story party deck located well behind the left-field wall. Joliet took a 2-1 lead on Brad Netzel’s RBI triple in the third inning.

Joliet broke the game open with a four-run fourth. The first six batters reached base to knock out Rockford starter Ziggie VanderWall. VanderWall walked three in the inning, including Eric McGee with the bases loaded, then surrendered a two-run single to Josh Lyon. VanderWall (6-5) gave up six runs on seven hits and took the loss.

Rockford closed the gap on RBI singles by Michael Hur in the fifth inning, Cuevas in the sixth and Evan Button in the seventh. Button rounded first on his single to right field and Dave Christensen threw to Lis at first to nab Button from behind. The Joliet bullpen retired the following eight batters in order to end the game.

Lis homered to right in the bottom of the seventh.

Joliet starter Matt Sommo (2-3) gave up 10 hits over six innings, but got the win. Rockford stranded seven, five in scoring position.
