RiverHawks win in Joliet, 4-3 in 13 innings

08/11/2012 12:35 PM - JOLIET, Ill. – A batter hit with the bases loaded and a wild pitch gave the Rockford RiverHawks an extra-inning lead and a long-relief stint from their closer helped them hold it in a 4-3, 13-inning victory over Joliet on Friday at Silver Cross Field.

The RiverHawks, who had been shut out until the ninth inning, rallied for two runs to send the game to extra innings. They took the lead in the 13th when Greg Van Horn was hit with the bases full and tacked on an insurance run on a wild pitch. Rockford closer Garrett Granitz gave up a run in the bottom of the 13th, but stranded the possible tying and winning runs to end the game.

Rockford won for the seventh time in 20 games and snapped Joliet’s season-best six-game winning streak.

The Slammers scored two unearned runs in the third inning off Rockford starter Kyle Schepel and took a 2-0 lead to the ninth. Jet Butler’s pinch-hit RBI single broke the shutout and rookie Jimmy Parque’s two-out RBI single tied the game.

In the Rockford 13th, Joliet reliever Chase Doremus (2-2) departed after he began the inning with back-to-back hits by Michael Hur and Matt Greener. Ray Cotilla relieved him, and after a sacrifice bunt, intentionally walked Butler to load the bases. Van Horn, who had entered the game as a pinch-runner in the 11th, was hit to force in Hur. Greener scored on a wild pitch.

Granitz (2-2) came on to get Rockford out of a two-on, one-out jam in the 10th inning and retired the first nine he faced in a 3 2/3-inning outing. In the bottom of the 13th, he gave up a two-out RBI single to Dave Christensen, but got Kyle Maunus on a popup to Butler at second base to leave runners at first and second.

The series continues at 6:05 p.m. Saturday.

The RiverHawks’ next home game is at 7:05 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 14, when they host Florence. Kids eat free on Tuesday nights with paid admission.
