September 17, 2007 - Former Rockford ace Jason Shelley helped pitch the Gary Railcats to a comeback in the Northern League championship series and a five-game win over Calgary.
The Vipers held a 2-1 lead in the best-of-five series. On Saturday, Shelley beat Calgary, 3-2, to force a fifth game. Shelley scattered two runs on five hits and struck out eight over 7 2/3 innings. On Sunday, Gary won the deciding game, 5-1.
The Railcats, managed by former Frontier League manager Greg Tagert and with a roster loaded with former FL players, won its second title in three years.
Shelley, Baseball America magazine's 2003 Independent League Player of the Year, was 7-4 with a 4.85 ERA in 17 starts for Gary this season. |
