Hall of Fame 2007 class to be announced Tuesday; FanFest guest may be headed to Cooperstown

January 4, 2007 - The Baseball Hall of Fame's Class of 2007 will be announced on Tuesday, with RiverHawks FanFest 2007 guest Lee Smith among the potential inductees.

Ex-Cubs Smith and Andre Dawson, the guest at FanFest 2005, are making repeat appearances on the HOF ballot. First-time candidates ballot include Cal Ripken, Jr., Tony Gwynn, both favorites to be sent to Cooperstown, and the controversial onetime Bash Brothers, Mark McGwire and Jose Canseco.

Voting is conducted by acting or honorary members of the Baseball Writers Association of America with 10 or more consecutive years of experience. There are approximately 575 voters who must return their ballots with a postmark no later than Dec. 31 each year. A candidate must be chosen on 75 percent of the ballots cast by the BBWAA membership. Voters may choose any and all of the players on the ballot.

While it has absolutely no bearing on the outcome of the real election, our just-for-fun HOF poll on the website will continue until next week. Unlike the real BBWAA election, you can vote for only one player. Currently, McGwire and Ripken have a slight edge over former all-star Alan Trammell, Gwynn and Dawson.
