Austin among former 'Hawks in Northern League
« Back

May 21, 2006 - Former Rockford RiverHawks abound in the independent Northern League. Five of the league's eight teams had at least one former 'Hawk on their opening-day rosters.

Rich Austin, the 2004 Frontier League MVP, hit his first two home runs of the season last night as his Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks won, 13-6, at Edmonton.

Calgary edged visiting Gary, 5-4, in a matchup filled with former RiverHawks. Jason Shelley, the 2003 Baseball America Independent League Player of the Year, started for the RailCats. He gave up two unearned runs in four innings, but struck out five. Calgary third baseman Aaron McEachran had a triple and a RBI in four at-bats. Justin Dowdy pitched a perfect 2 1/3 innings of relief for the Cannons.

Joliet first baseman Jayson Drobiak was 2-for-5 with a RBI as the Jackhammers lost, 7-3, at Winnipeg.

Schaumburg lefty Derrick Ellison has yet to appear in a game.
