RiverHawks sign three pitchers

July 27, 2011 - LOVES PARK, Ill. – The Rockford RiverHawks have added three pitchers to the roster and released three others.

Rockford’s only professional baseball team announced Wednesday that it has signed pitchers Matt Gibbs (right), Brad Allen and Ryan Smith.

Gibbs, 26, began the season with the Sioux City Explorers in the independent American Association. The righthander went 5-4 with a 6.21 earned-run average in 18 games and three starts for the Explorers. Sioux City released Gibbs on July 21.

Gibbs was drafted by the Kansas City Royals in 2005, and began his pro career in 2009. Last season, Gibbs made one relief appearance for the Florence Freedom.

Allen, 22, is a true rookie from Arkansas State University. He went 3-5 with a 5.56 earned-run average in 16 games and 15 starts for the NCAA Division I school this spring. Allen also pitched for Northern Illinois University in 2008.

He appeared in five games for Northern Illinois, and posted a 6.43 earned-run average.

Smith, 22, is also a true rookie from Dartmouth College. He went 3-1 with a 3.94 earned-run average and four saves in 19 appearances for the Big Green this spring. Smith was a First-Team All-Ivy League selection.

As a sophomore in 2009, Smith set a single-season program and league record with 11 saves. Smith is also the Ivy League’s all-time saves leader with 28.

The RiverHawks made room on the roster with the release of lefthanders Matt Zoltak and Steve Cadoret, as well as righthander Guido Fonseca, Jr.

Zoltak went 3-2 with a 6.94 earned-run average in 12 games and 10 starts. Cadoret made 16 relief appearances and had a 6.30 earned run average.

Fonseca was the RiverHawks Opening Night starter, and finished his tenure in Rockford with a 2-7 record and a 4.91 earned-run average in 12 starts.
