Crushers shut out RiverHawks, 2-0
« Back

July 19, 2011 - AVON, Ohio – The Rockford RiverHawks wasted both early scoring chances and a strong start from Alex Szymanski on Tuesday.

The RiverHawks left 11 on base and lost, 2-0, to the Lake Erie Crushers at All Pro Freight Stadium.

Josh Roberts combined with Ruben Flores on the seven-hit shutout and edged Syzmanski in the pitchers’ duel.

Szymanski (4-2) limited the Crushers to three hits over seven innings. Jodam Rivera led off the first inning with a home run and Szymanski didn’t give up another hit until Andrew Davis’ two-out RBI single in the sixth inning. Both of Szymanski’s losses this year were against the Crushers – he lost a head-to-head matchup with Roberts on June 18 in Loves Park.

Roberts (6-3) kept the RiverHawks scoreless on six hits over eight innings. He struck out five and walked two to win his fourth straight decision. Roberts has beaten the RiverHawks in all three starts in the season series and carries a 1.64 ERA against Rockford.

Roberts survived a bumpy beginning on Tuesday. He gave up five hits the first trip through the order. With two on and nobody out in the first inning, Roberts got Jake Eigsti to line into a double play and after a Jason James single, retired Matt Greener on a fly to center field. In the second inning, Greg Van Horn grounded into a double play to end a first-and-third, one-out threat.

With one out in the ninth inning, Lake Erie closer Ruben Flores hit two and gave up an infield hit to get into a bases-loaded jam. Flores struck out Freddy Parejo and Dave Cooper to end the game and earn his 10th save.

The RiverHawks have lost three in a row and have dropped the first two games of a three-game series. The Crushers have a chance for the sweep at 10:05 a.m. CDT Wednesday. The game will be aired live on ESPN 1380.

The RiverHawks’ next home game is at 7:05 p.m. Thursday, when they host Washington on a Miller Lite/RBI’s Thirsty Thursday.
