July 10, 2011 - EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The Rockford closer is headed to the Frontier League All-Star Game. Sunday’s starting pitcher made a pretty good case that he also should have gotten an invitation.
Alex Szymanski struck out six over eight two-hit innings and combined with Brett Durand on a 3-0 shutout of Evansville at Bosse Field.
The RiverHawks salvaged the finale of the three-game series and head to the four-day all-star break winners of six of their last nine.
In his last three starts of the first half, Szymanski (4-1) earned two wins – the RiverHawks won all three – and struck out 23 in 23 innings.
On Sunday, the lefty held the Otters to a double by Mike Durant in the second inning and Durant’s leadoff single in the eighth. Szymanski walked two – after the first, he picked off the runner and retired 13 in a row. Evansville did not get a runner to third base on Sunday.
Durand, a first-time all-star, retired the side in order in the ninth inning for his ninth save in 11 chances.
Rockford led from the first inning on. Evansville starter Kyle Eastham (0-2) walked four in the first inning, including Cam Satterwhite with the bases loaded. Jeremy Richter doubled the lead with a RBI groundout in the third. In the seventh inning, Reno Malay led off with a double, went to third base on a balk and scored on a wild pitch.
The RiverHawks open the second half at 7:05 p.m. Friday at Joliet.
The RiverHawks’ next home game is at 7:05 p.m. July 21, when they host Washington on a Miller Lite/RBI’s Thirsty Thursday.
The RiverHawks are members of the Frontier League, a 12-team independent professional baseball league in its 19th season. Advertising and ticket information is available by calling (815) 885-2255. Fans can also visit www.rockfordriverhawks.com.
