RiverHawks acquire pitcher, outfielder in trade

May 3, 2011 - LOVES PARK, Ill. – The Rockford RiverHawks have received two players in a trade with the Windy City ThunderBolts.

Rockford’s only professional baseball team announced Tuesday it has acquired righthanded pitcher Brandon Garner and outfielder Jeremy Hamilton from Windy City for players to be named later.

Garner spent a little over two seasons with the ThunderBolts. Last year he went 0-3 with three saves and a 3.19 earned-run average in 40 games out of the bullpen. In 2009, Garner compiled a 3-4 record with an 8.62 earned-run average in 30 total appearances and five starts.

Prior to joining the Frontier League, Garner was in the St. Louis Cardinals farm system, reaching as high as the Class A Advanced Palm Beach Cardinals in the Florida State League.

Drafted by the Cardinals in the 18th round in 2005, Garner is entering his sixth professional season. He holds a 7-14 career record with a 5.21 earned-run average in 150 games and 16 starts.

Hamilton split time last year between Windy City and the Winnipeg Goldeyes in the independent Northern League. In 45 games with the ThunderBolts, Hamilton batted .238 with two home runs and 16 RBI. Hamilton also played in 30 games for Winnipeg, where he hit .244 and drove in six runs.

Hamilton was drafted by the Philadelphia Phillies in the fifth round in 2008, and spent two years in their organization. He reached as high as the Class A Lakewood Blue Claws in the South Atlantic League.

Entering his fourth professional season, Hamilton has a lifetime average of .245 with eight home runs and 70 RBI.
