RiverHawks pick three pitchers in draft
« Back

December 23, 2010 - LOVES PARK, Ill. – Three pitchers, one a longtime nemesis, have joined the Rockford RiverHawks.

The RiverHawks selected the three – right-handers Ross Stout and Billy Jackel and lefty Paul Fagan – in the dispersal draft of the Joliet Jackhammers’ roster. The Jackhammers have ceased operations and the three Northern League teams – Rockford, Schaumburg and Lake County – participating in the new North American League drafted players from the Joliet roster this week.

Stout was 5-8 with a 5.83 earned-run average in 14 appearances. The former Arizona farmhand struck out 59 and walked 17 in an injury-shortened season. He will turn 27 in February.

Stout, a veteran who has faced the RiverHawks both with Joliet and with the Frontier League’s Windy City ThunderBolts, is 5-1 lifetime against Rockford. His only loss was in his last matchup, an 8-2 defeat on July 22 at Joliet.

While in the Frontier League, Stout won a pennant with the ‘Bolts in 2008 and led the circuit in strikeouts in ’09.

Fagan has also enjoyed success in the Frontier League. He went 14-3 with a 2.70 ERA for pennant-winning Lake Erie in 2009. He was named Frontier League Pitcher of the Year and was named by Baseball America magazine to its all-Independent Leagues Second Team.

Fagan split last season among three indy teams – Joliet, New Jersey of the Can-Am League and Newark of the Atlantic League. He had a combined record of 4-9 with a 5.81 ERA in 26 appearances.

Fagan, who will be 26 in April, was Seattle’s fourth-round pick in the 2003 draft.

Jackel was 5-4 with a 3.25 ERA in 46 relief appearances with the Jackhammers. He was the Florida Marlins’ 43rd-round pick in 2006.

The RiverHawks will play their 10th season in the Stateline in 2011. Advertising and ticket information is available by calling (815) 885-2255. Fans can also visit www.rockfordriverhawks.com.
