Returning reliever Muller among many moves
« Back

August 10, 2010 - LOVES PARK, Ill. – One of the top relievers in RiverHawks history is coming back to Rockford.

Rockford’s only professional baseball team announced on Tuesday that it has signed pitcher John Muller. Muller, a former Chicago Cubs farmhand, was the RiverHawks’ closer last year. In addition, the team acquired pitcher Raymar Diaz and outfielder Vic Buttler in a trade with St. George of the independent Golden League.

The RiverHawks released four players – outfielder Kevin House and relief pitchers Emary Frederick, Luis Carreras and David Wagner.

Last year, Muller was 2-3 with a 2.60 earned-run average and 12 saves in 23 appearances. Muller is fourth on the team’s single-season and career save lists. This year, Muller pitched for three teams in the independent Atlantic League. This year, he was a composite 2-2 with a 4.29 ERA and seven saves with Lancaster, York and Camden. Muller was traded twice, then was released by Camden on Aug. 4.

The RiverHawks acquired Diaz and Buttler from St. George in exchange for future considerations. The St. George owners have folded the franchise and the Golden League will operate the Roadrunners as a road team for the rest of the year.

Diaz was 5-6 with a 3.49 ERA in 13 starts with the Roadrunners. The former Houston farmhand completed two of 13 starts. The right-hander struck out 66 and walked 23 in 85 innings.

Buttler hit .353 with three home runs and 24 RBI in 54 games. He stole 17 bases in 20 attempts. Buttler, who spent eight years in the Pittsburgh organization, did not play in 2008-09.

House had been with the RiverHawks all year. He hit .262 with seven home runs and 35 RBI in 70 games, primarily as the left fielder. He had 18 steals, tied with Jono Brooks for the team lead.

Frederick had no record, an ERA of 9.00 and a save in eight appearances. Carreras had no record and a 1.93 ERA in four games. Wagner was 0-1 with an 8.71 ERA in nine appearances.

The moves leave the RiverHawks with 22 players, one short of the Northern League limit.

The RiverHawks are members of the Northern League, an eight-team independent professional baseball league in its 18th season.
