RiverHawks finish Fargo sweep with 15-4 win
« Back

August 8, 2010 - FARGO, N.D. – The Rockford RiverHawks didn’t bother to break out the brooms on Sunday. They got enough done with the bats.

The RiverHawks pounded out 18 hits and scored a season high in a 15-4 win over Fargo-Moorhead at Newman Outdoor Field. The RiverHawks completed a three-game series sweep in which they outscored the RedHawks, 29-10. Rockford is on a four-game winning streak, its first since the first week of the season.

The cleanup spot alone accounted for a quasi-cycle. Starting right fielder Pat O’Sullivan was 2-for-2 with a double and a walk. Kevin House, who replaced O’Sullivan in the lineup in the bottom of the fifth inning, was 3-for-3 with a home run and triple. The two combined to reach base in all six plate appearances and to score five runs.

Jason James and House hit back-to-back homers in the seventh inning. Fargo’s Jesse Hoorelbeke hit two home runs, his 23rd and 24th.

The RiverHawks remain three games behind Joliet and Winnipeg, who are tied for the last two Northern League playoff spots. The Jackhammers beat Schaumburg, 10-4. The Goldeyes beat first-place Kansas City, 17-7.

Rockford never trailed. They scored four times on just three hits in the third inning to break a 2-2 tie and knock out Fargo starter T.J. Stanton. O’Sullivan led off with a single, Travis Scott walked and Evan McArthur reached a on a bunt single to the pitcher when Stanton fell down. Rookie catcher Franco Valdes singled to left field with the bases loaded to drive in O’Sullivan. Stanton (4-4), who walked five, left with one out after he walked Jono Brooks with the bases loaded to force in Scott. Lefty Adam Tollefson relieved and hit both John Wagle and Rich Austin with the bases loaded to force in two more runs.

Rockford starter Roger Lincoln gave up three runs on seven hits over 5 1/3 innings for the win. Lincoln (5-6) struck out four without a walk and ended a three-start winless streak.

The RiverHawks earned their first series sweep since they moved from the Frontier League to the Northern. Their last sweep was in a three-game trip July 10-12, 2009 at Kalamazoo. They had not won four straight since May 21-24 of this year, a streak that began on the second day of the season.

Rockford is off Monday. The RiverHawks are home Tuesday for a 6:05 p.m. doubleheader against Joliet. It’s Two-For Tuesday. Tickets are two for the price of one.
